YOUR PLANNING ESTIMATE

Know your window before you count your hours.

Choose your jurisdiction to see its source and any special considerations. This tool checks ethics hours only, not total CPD, exemptions or licence requirements.

How the estimate works and what it covers

For the nine rolling-period jurisdictions listed, the planner uses a four-hour ethics target over the selected year and the two preceding calendar years. The next-year estimate excludes the oldest year and assumes no new learning yet. It is a planning aid, not a compliance declaration or a course-approval tool. New members, exemptions, multiple memberships and specific requirements may need a different assessment. Québec and other jurisdictions receive guidance rather than a rolling-period calculation.

Planning estimate only. Check total CPD, exemptions, prescribed courses and licence requirements with your professional body.

TRY THE REASONING BEFORE THE COURSE

The quarter closes today.
The evidence does not.

Your CFO asks you to record revenue before quarter-end. Customer acceptance is still missing. “We have always done it this way,” they say. What is your strongest next step?

Choose a response
Read the reasoning

The strongest starting point is the evidence and applicable criteria. Identify what is known, what remains unverified and which obligations apply. Consider pressure, affected stakeholders and whether consultation or escalation is proportionate. Neither routine practice nor an unsupported allegation resolves the evidence gap. The facts and relevant standards determine the accounting conclusion.

THE TESTED DECISION CYCLE

Make your judgment TESTED.

SHALALA’s teaching framework helps structure the questions. It works alongside applicable professional standards; it does not replace them.

  1. T

    Tension

    What makes this decision difficult?

  2. E

    Evidence

What is known, assumed or missing?

  3. S

    Standards & Stakeholders

Which obligations apply, and who is affected?

  4. T

    Threats & Trade-offs

What pressure could distort the reasoning?

  5. E

    External Lens

Would an independent reviewer find it defensible?

  6. D

    Decide & Document

What response is proportionate, and why?

YOUR LEARNING RECORD

Complete the course and keep your records.

Approximately 1 hour per module, or approximately 4 hours for all four modules, including assessment and reflection. Full completion may take longer.

  1. Work through the lesson and learning guide.
  2. Complete the module's final assessment and reflection.
  3. Keep your learning objectives, assessment record and available completion evidence with your CPD records.

Count completed learning that is relevant to your role under your professional body's rules. Where hours are required, record qualifying active learning time, exclude breaks and administration, and avoid counting overlapping video and companion time twice.

CANADIAN ETHICS CPD · CHECK THE SOURCE

Your provincial rules come first.

View professional-body requirements and official sources

Ethics hours sit within broader CPD requirements. Confirm your membership category, reporting window, exemptions and any prescribed learning before making a declaration.

British Columbia: check AML separately

CPABC requires 1.5 hours of qualifying AML learning for members in scope. Current members generally have a December 31, 2026 deadline; admission-date rules apply to newer members. Qualifying AML hours can also count toward ethics. This course is not presented as AML training.

Québec: confirm the reference period and Code course

Québec requires four hours of structured professional ethics learning within its three-year reference period. Its current guidance also requires the prescribed three-hour Code of Ethics course. This general ethics course does not replace that prescribed course.

Official guidance reviewed October 8, 2026. Follow the linked authority if its rules change. For territorial or multiple memberships, confirm the applicable requirements with each body.
